Bowing of the legs can persist in some children and become more noticeable in the adolescent years. In addition to the aesthetic issue, bow legs can lead to significant mal-alignment where the forces in the upright position are transmitted through the inner aspect of the knee rather than across both sides of the knee. This can cause pain and degenerative change in adult life leading to arthritis. The first step in evaluating bow legs is to have a standing x-ray of the legs. This allows the extent of bow leg deformity to be accurately characterized on a spectrum from mild to severe. Patients with severe deformity and painful symptoms may benefit from surgical intervention to correct their knee alignment. Depending on the type of deformity, the deformity can be corrected with an external fixator or with internal fixation using a plate, as advised by Dr. Qureshi, pediatric orthopedic specialist.
